We are closing our Minnehaha store.
To our customers, partner organizations, and greater South Minneapolis community,
We are reaching out today to share some extraordinarily difficult news, and to ask for your support.
We will be closing our Minnehaha Flagship location. This represents a tremendous loss, both for us and for the cyclists who have called this their neighborhood bike shop for 21 years. It is also the decision that keeps The Hub in Minneapolis in the long term. Our last day open will be September 30th. Repair intake will cease on September 18th, or as soon as we are booked through September. We will be moving all of our operations to our 401 SE Oak St/ U of M Bike Center location. Operations at Oak Street will continue as usual, while we search for a location that can support the vibrant staff and passionate customers that make us who we are.
There are many factors that led to the necessity for this decision. The cycling industry and the outdoor retail industry are going through difficult times; the struggle to compete with larger online retailers, and reduced profit margins on our products are impacts felt by all small businesses. Increased costs combined with declining sales made it unsustainable to keep our large shop open.
Our heaviest grief sits in losing the majority of our amazing, talented, and compassionate staff in this downsizing. Most of the great people who make this shop the place it is will not be able to join us during this transition. It speaks volumes how many of these folks have selflessly collaborated in discussion and helped us realize this decision. It shows how a worker-owned and operated bicycle shop can bring about personal growth and empowerment in the lives of the folks who work with us, while serving the customers who visit us and trust us with their bikes.
We are saddened to be leaving this neighborhood. We will miss providing a community space to gather and share knowledge about cycling, and we will miss working with you in our Open Shops, DIY Space, and classes. Our existence in South Minneapolis has always been due to support from our community - from all of you who work in our DIY stands, get your bikes fixed with us, take classes, and shop in our store. You’ve helped us to thrive for more than 21 years, and we’re committed to providing a place where all types of cyclists experience belonging and empowerment for years to come.
As we work towards transferring our business operations from 12,000 square feet to about 600 square feet, we need your continued support.
You can show up for The Hub in a variety of ways – through purchasing awesome bikes and great gear at huge discounts in our Liquidation Sale, by donating to our Keep the Hub Alive fundraising campaign, and/or by leaving us a Google review and recommending us to your friends, family, and neighbors. **Money raised will be distributed to laid off staff in form of compensation in October.**
Thank you again for the love you have shown our business. We pledge to continue to help keep you rubber side down, and to always welcome you into our space no matter the square footage, or which side of the river we call home.
